Without A Map Photography

About Me

I started taking photos from a young age.  My grandfather worked in a photographic lab first in New York City and eventually closer to his home on Long Island.  Despite always having a camera in hand, I did not really evolve my style until College when I took a darkroom course and got to develop Black and White Film the old fashioned way.

Throughout my photographic career I’ve had a number of different focuses and inspiration.  While photography is mainly a hobby for me, I do accept select engagements, and exhibitions.

This photo is a great example of my style.  Taken on the Vrijthof in Maastricht, Netherlands (a city I was fortunate to live in for five years), it was taken using a Mamiya RZ 67 on Rollei Retro 400S.

Maastricht is very picturesque, but there is something interesting about the sculpture of a Carnivale Parade in front of the St. Servaaskerk (Bascillica of St. Servatius).

I tend to gravitate towards Black and White because it provides the ability to really see more detail, and experience the world in a way that is not possible with color.

You can see my work, and read about my cameras, and travels on these pages.  I’d encourage you to reach out if anything speaks to you.

Currently I’m living in the Hudson Valley, in NY State, in the United States.  When I get time to shoot for fun I often use analog 35mm or 120mm film.

I’m a member of the Center for Photography Woodstock, and enjoy using their digital lab for my hybrid workflow.

Cameras

My preferred workflow involves shooting black and white film with a medium format or large format camera.  The detail available with a large negative blows modern digital cameras out of the water.  Such photography is meditative and relaxing.

I have been known to purchase cameras at flea markets or thrift stores to rescue or restore.

Sometimes it’s not possible to take the slow pace dictated by shooting film, I also use various digital cameras.  I lean heavily on DxO for their various plug ins like Silver Efex.  Other digital tools include Photoshop and Lightroom

Below are just a few of the cameras I use, with a link to a gallery showing pictures from that camera.
